My Coveting

Psalm 73:2 CSB “But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Psalm 73:21-28 CSB “When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, I was stupid and didn’t understand; I was an unthinking animal toward you. Yet I am always with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me up in glory. Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. Those far from you will certainly perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord God my refuge, so I can tell about all you do.”

I can’t tell you how many times I have looked at people and thought ? : how come he/she has this? How come they have that? It’s not fair! How come people who don’t follow God have more than I do? Why do people lie on me and say bad things about me?

One thing I have learned is not to look at what others have. God tells us not to covet what others have. A wise teacher told me that when God talks about covetousness, He didn’t only mean material things—-we shouldn’t covet anything that someone has, including their thoughts. Often times we (myself included) get caught up in what others think of us and I’m beginning to see that none of that matters. What matters is what God thinks, not what someone else has to say. There’s an old song that says ?let’s give them something to talk about ? —-so let people talk! You can’t change what someone thinks about you and besides, it’s not our job to do that. Focus on what God the Father thinks. The foolish things doesn’t matter.

Stop ? looking at what others have and be grateful for what you do have. Just because someone seemingly has more than you do—-doesn’t mean God gave it to them. How do you know if they didn’t lie, steal or scheme just to get that thing? True riches isn’t money, houses or cars. True riches is to do good, be rich in good works, to be generous willing to share with others (1 Tim 6:17-18). Desire what God calls good riches. Desire what He desires only ?
